It was a nice April day and Megan Kelley stood in her living room and looked out on the deck and drank her morning coffee. She had a good view most days and today the visibility was reasonable except for some mist rolling in on the water’s edge. Her deck had changed considerably since this time last March when she often found excuses not to set foot it. She had warned the renters in her her small apartment complex about slick surfaces. At the time it had been a sorry sight, it had been slimy because of mildew deposits and a couple boards had a little too much give in them. At the time, she had thought that the only solution would be tearing down the decks and starting over. She had decided that the place to start would be by calling a local company that specialized in building maintenance services. She chose Chinook Services because she had heard good things about them from friends.
Chinook Services were prompt in fixing an appointment with Megan to give her a free estimate for the work. Larry Simon came out and looked at the decks with Megan.
“I think I’m going to need a new deck,” said Megan, “these have seen a lot of better days.”
“Oh, no…no…no,” said Larry, “there is no need to start over. If you like the style and size, all you really need to do is have us soft wash it, replace a few of planks, and then stain and seal it."
“Really?” said Megan, “I was sure that there was nothing that could save these old decks.”
“I know it looks rough now,” said Larry, “but if you allow us to do the work, I know that you will not be disappointed.”
“Great,” said Megan, “how soon before you can get started on the work?”
“Just let me make a quick call back to the office and I’ll let you know when we can get a team out here to take care of making these decks look brand new,” answered Larry.
A few minutes later Larry was finished with his phone call.
“We can come out on Wednesday if that is convenient for you.”
“Definitely,” said Megan. Wednesday was only a week away. “I’ll be at work most of the day but the decks will be here accessible for you. I'll inform my renters, so they cab move a few hibachis.”
“Excellent,” said Larry, “Your new deck should be finished enough to walk on by the end of next week. We'll reschedule a date for sealing and staining for sometime in April, when we can find some dry and warmer days.”
Now, it was November and Megan and her renters had had the whole summer and part of the fall to enjoy the decks. It looked even better than when she had first seen it when bought the small apartment building five years before. The decks had gotten lots of uses over the summer. Everyone had friends over for barbecues and deck parties. She had even sponsored a summer picnic for all her guests. She thought of the money that not having to replace the deck had saved her, which had allowed her the sponsorship of her event and the rewards that it was reaping her. Megan took another sip of her coffee and thought about how the universe had a plan, and sometimes it was just a matter of meeting the right people at the right time. In her case meeting Larry from Chinook Services had proved to be extremely worthwhile. The icing on the cake was Larry's last words, "You know when we do a soft wash we use a safe chemical that protects against mold and mildew for two years." Megan thought a second and then asked, "Do you do gutters, too." Larry just smiled and nodded his head.
