Moss has it's place. Hanging from the trees in our rain forests on the Olympic Peninsula is a perfect location for moss. Growing on roofs, sidewalks, and decks in the Great Seattle area is not the perfect place for moss . . . nor mildew.
We have beautiful views of Puget Sound, the Olympics, the Cascades, and especially Mount Rainier, but who wants to look our from a nice apartment and see rooftops covered with shades of green. Moss on roofs and meldew on sidewalks, walls, and driveways is not a pretty sight. What's worse is that moss can damage cedar shakes. Repairs to siding and roofs can be very expensive.
The slime that meldew produces is dangerous to walk on and drive on. Parking lots can be hazardous areas for skids, slips, and falls. Besides stuctural damage moss and mildew can be costly with insurace costs and law suits. Since this is a constant problem here is Western Washington the only protection is to remove the moss and mildew.
There are two accepted methods of removing moss and mildew. One is pressure washing the other is soft washing. Each has its place. Pressure washing uses a powerful stream of water that washes away everything in its path and is ideal for driveways, and sidewalks, but the jet stream can cause damage to siding, roofs, and window screens by cutting right into various materials.
The other method of moss and mildew removal is soft washing. With soft washing a cleaning solution is applied to the moss and mildew and then washed off with gently stream. Leading roof, siding and paint manufactures (A.R.M.A.) recommend the use of our soft wash method. With our climate, moss and mildew can easily come back every year, but with soft washing we guarantee our results and no moss will re-grow for two years after our soft wash solution is applied.
